# Tool – Building Your Events List

Events are an essential part of measuring user engagement and [collecting your data](/v1/docs/why-is-data-important-to-a-connected-product). That's why we've created [this handy tool to help you build out your events list](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jvxJay6pv-1EtXpDqHJkpAaNQyE0vX3r7aoB_GMjbxY/edit#gid=83307274).

The marketing and product teams are usually responsible for creating the list, then your development team can use these events as a benchmark for success.

Here are a few examples:

- **sign_up** – user has registered after a successful response from server
- **device_activated** – user turned on the device
- **brightness_changed** – user changed the bulb brightness

Our events list includes more examples, options, and suggestions to help you build out your list.

By the end, your list should cover all the points in the user journey that you'll be using to track engagement and trigger interactions with your users.
